5 things you can do to help cool off your dog in the summer

Summer is upon us and it’s not easy to escape the heat, whether you have two legs or four. This is the time when things get a bit more carefree and relaxed, and we all look for ways to cool down and have some fun.

Depending on how fluffy your pup is, keeping him comfortable on a hot day may prove to a bit of a challenge. There is no need to get envious of all the hot weather loving dogs though, as there are multiple options available to bring comfort even to the furriest of friends. Here, at Wikopet, we’ve compiled a little reminder list for you:

Drinking water

Fresh drinking water is a must at all times, but it’s especially important on a hot day. It wouldn’t hurt to throw in a couple of ice cubes, for extra fun, either. Remember to carry it with you when walking, hiking , or doing any other type of physical activity your dog likes to be a part of.

Splashing water

Kiddie pools, splashing pools, big pools, or huge bowls; they love them all! And if not, you can at least mist them with a little spray bottle, or at least wipe them down with a wet towel. Just remember not to let water get in their ears!

Cooling mats

If you haven’t heard of these nifty inventions, it’s time to get very well-acquainted with them! They are light-weight, waterproof mats filled with cooling gel that resets when not in use, no electricity or refrigeration needed. You can travel with them or spread them in your dog bed. How cool is that?

Sun-screen

Puppies and smooth-coated doggos have sensitive skin which may burn easily, but even our thick-coated friends can suffer from extended sun exposure . Ask your vet to recommend the best sun block option to protect your furbaby.

5. Shade

While it’s difficult to keep your dog inside an air-conditioned home all day long, try to walk them early in the morning, or late in the evening, and find them some nice shade to rest in if they want to accompany you outside. While some pups love basking in the sun, they should always have a place to hide from it when it becomes too much.

With a bit of preparation, keeping your dog cool in the summer shouldn’t be too much of a problem. Just please remember to never, ever leave them unattended in a car, even with windows down; even for a minute. While this might be a minor convenience, it is certainly a major hazard.
